Sometime around late July, a question starts nagging at parents of rising 3rd graders: is my kid actually ready for this? You’ve heard 3rd grade is a big year — multiplication, fractions, the whole thing — and you’d like to know now, not at the October conference, whether there’s a gap to close.

Good instinct. Here’s a checklist you can run in a week of casual, ten-minute sessions. Every item comes from what the Common Core standards expect by the end of 2nd grade — which is exactly what 3rd grade teachers will assume on day one. (Most states use these standards or a close variant, but they may go by a different name in yours.)

The checklist

1. Knows single-digit addition facts from memory. Ask “what’s 7 + 8?” and “what’s 6 + 9?” casually, away from any worksheet. The standard (2.OA.B.2) says these should come from memory by the end of 2nd grade — not from counting fingers. This is the single most important item on the list, because multiplication is built on it.

2. Can add and subtract within 100 comfortably. Something like 47 + 25 or 63 − 38, on paper. Strategies are fine (they don’t need the fastest method), but they should get there without distress.

3. Understands place value to 1,000. “What’s the 5 worth in 853... wait, what about in 583?” They should know hundreds, tens, and ones, and be able to compare numbers like 405 and 450.

4. Can tell time to the nearest 5 minutes. On an analog clock — 3rd grade moves to the nearest minute and to elapsed-time problems, so “quarter past” should already be comfortable.

5. Can solve simple money problems. “You have three quarters, a dime, and two pennies — how much is that?” Dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies.

6. Can measure and compare lengths. Uses a ruler in inches and centimeters and can answer “how much longer is this one?”

7. Sees equal groups. Can skip-count by 2s and 5s and figure out “four bags with five apples in each — how many apples?” by any method at all. This is 2nd grade’s on-ramp to multiplication; the standards call it “foundations for multiplication.”

How to score it (gently)

Run these as games across a few days — breakfast questions, car questions — never as a test. Kids can smell a test.

Why #1 matters so much

Third grade’s headline act is multiplication and division — the standards put “multiplication and division within 100” first among the year’s four focus areas, alongside fractions, area, and shapes. Multiplication is taught through equal groups and arrays, and it leans hard on addition: a child who knows 8 + 8 + 8 without labor has a running start on 3 × 8. One who’s still finger-counting is doing two hard jobs at once.

So if you shore up exactly one thing before September, make it addition facts — automatic, from memory, no fingers. Ten minutes at a time is plenty.
