It’s July. The workbook you bought in June is somewhere under the pool towels, your kid has been to two camps and a water park, and somewhere between sunscreen and snack duty a nagging little thought keeps surfacing: shouldn’t we be doing math?

If that guilt sounds familiar, this post is for you. Because the honest, research-backed answer to “how much summer math is enough?” is: much less than you probably fear. But it isn’t zero — and the difference between zero and “a little” turns out to matter more than the difference between “a little” and “a lot.”

What the “summer slide” research actually says

The scary version you’ve seen in headlines comes from older research. A classic 1996 meta-analysis led by Harris Cooper estimated that students lose roughly a month of learning over summer on average, with math hit harder than reading — and that’s the number that launched a thousand panicked July workbook purchases.

But newer, much larger studies complicate the picture. An analysis of 3.4 million students found that summer slide is common but not inevitable — plenty of kids hold steady or even gain. And some researchers have struggled to replicate the older findings at all with modern tests, arguing the losses may be smaller than we once thought.

The honest summary: some kids lose ground over the summer, some don’t, and the doom headlines overstate the certainty. Your child’s school year is not being ruined at the pool. But a little maintenance genuinely helps — and “a little” is the operative word.

Why minutes beat marathons

Here’s the part of learning science that should lift the guilt off your shoulders: how practice is spaced matters more than how long it lasts. A review of 254 studies found that people remember more after practice spread across multiple short sessions than after the same amount crammed into one sitting. A later landmark review of learning techniques rated this kind of “distributed practice” one of the most effective strategies known.

In plain terms: ten minutes on Tuesday, ten on Thursday, and ten on Saturday will do more for your child than a forty-minute make-up session on Sunday. The marathon feels more virtuous. The minutes work better.

And small doses with a parent go surprisingly far. In a study of 587 first-graders published in Science, families who did short math story problems together — even about once a week — saw measurably better math growth over the school year, with the biggest gains in families where the parents were anxious about math themselves. (That study ran during the school year, not summer, but the message travels: brief, regular parent-child math moves the needle.)

So what’s the actual number?

No study hands parents a prescription in minutes. But grounded in the research above, here’s a defensible target for a rising 2nd–4th grader:

About ten focused minutes, three or so times a week.

Focused means one skill at a time, no TV in the background, and done before everyone is melting down. If daily works for your family, wonderful — but three good sessions beat zero perfect ones, every time.

What to practice: one thing, done well

If your child is heading into 3rd grade, there’s one priority worth most of those minutes: addition and subtraction facts, to the point of being automatic. The standards expect kids to know single-digit sums from memory by the end of 2nd grade (2.OA.B.2) for a reason: 3rd grade is the year of multiplication, and times tables are built directly on top of those facts. A child still counting 8 + 5 on fingers in September will spend the fall doing two jobs at once.

The minutes don’t have to look like school, either:

  • A few fact questions at breakfast (“what’s 7 + 8? now what’s 15 − 7?”)
  • Doubling a cookie recipe together — measuring is math in disguise
  • Grocery store math: “we have $10, the berries are $4 — what’s left?”
  • One workbook page, then done — stop while it’s still going well

Started late? The guilt stops here

Maybe it’s mid-July and you’ve done exactly nothing since the last day of school. Good news: the spacing research is on your side. Short sessions starting now still work — what doesn’t work is trying to “catch up” with hour-long cram sessions in late August. That’s massed practice, the weaker kind, applied to a tired kid at the worst possible moment.
