Here’s a scene from thousands of kitchens: a bright kid with ADHD who can explain exactly what multiplication means — equal groups, arrays, the whole concept — but who, for the third night in a row, stares at 7 × 8 like they’ve never met. You drilled it yesterday. It was solid yesterday. Today it’s gone.
If you’re living like this, the first thing to know is that the explanation isn’t effort, and it isn’t intelligence. It’s memory mechanics — and once you know how your child’s brain works, helping them gets easier.
The concept isn’t the problem
Start with what’s working. Research comparing children with and without ADHD finds that the basic “number sense” — the intuitive grasp of quantities that underpins math — is typically intact in ADHD. That matches what you see at home: your child gets multiplication. The breakdown happens somewhere else: in storage and retrieval.
The real bottleneck: working memory
Working memory is the brain’s scratchpad — the system that holds information in mind while you use it. It’s also one of the systems ADHD hits hardest. In studies of math skills in children with ADHD, working memory differences largely account for the math gap; in one analysis, ADHD status and working memory together explained about 65% of the variance in math achievement, with math fluency — fast fact recall — among the affected skills.
Here’s why that affects times tables specifically. A fact gets into long-term memory through repeated successful retrievals — pull it out, get it right, the trace strengthens. But each retrieval attempt runs through the scratchpad, and an ADHD scratchpad is crowded: the dog, the itchy sock, the half-finished thought about Minecraft. Practice sessions produce fewer clean retrievals, so each session deposits less than it would for another child. The facts aren’t refusing to stick. They’re getting fewer chances to.
That also explains the maddening now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t pattern. A fact that’s weakly stored is retrievable on a calm morning and unreachable on a chaotic evening — the memory is there, but a taxed scratchpad can’t reach it. It looks like inconsistency of effort. In reality your child hasn’t lost the fact — it’s just not locked in yet, so it only shows up when their mind is calm.
Why this fight is worth having
It would be easier to shrug and hand over a chart forever. But the standards expect one-digit products from memory by the end of 3rd grade for a reason that matters double for ADHD kids: a memorized fact costs zero working memory. Every fact your child owns outright frees scratchpad space for the multi-step problems where ADHD kids otherwise run out of room. The researchers studying ADHD and math specifically recommend building math-fact automaticity for exactly this reason. Fact fluency isn’t the enemy of the ADHD brain. It’s armor for it.
What finally works
Shorter, more frequent practice. Spacing research favors short spread-out sessions for everyone; for an ADHD child, a five-minute session ends before their attention span does. Five minutes daily beats twenty minutes twice a week — and beats forty on Sunday by a mile.
Retrieval, one fact at a time. A fact gets stronger every time your child pulls the answer from memory — not when they see it on a chart. So ask, don’t show: flash cards, or quick out-loud questions while you pour the cereal. And keep the set tiny — two or three facts at a time, practiced until they’re easy, then add one more. A tiny set means lots of right answers per session — and each right answer locks the fact in a little deeper.
Catch them at a good moment. Practice sticks best when your child’s mind is fresh, not already overloaded. For many families that’s morning, or right after physical activity (a bike ride, the trampoline, twenty jumping jacks) — not 7pm post-homework. You know your child’s windows; spend the five minutes inside one.
Give the stubborn facts a hook. Tricks and stories bypass the crowded scratchpad in your child’s brain by giving a fact more than one way in — the 9s finger trick, “8 × 8 fell on the floor, picked it up, it was 64.” In the Multiplication Workbook, the team meets Ms. Jenny Huang, Mission Control’s multiplication expert. Expect memory fade, plan the refresh. Facts that were solid will wobble after a break. That’s not regression or failure — it just means it’s been a few days since the last practice. A quick warm-up on “mastered” facts at the start of each session boosts confidence and encourages learning new times-table facts.
When it might be more than ADHD
